How it works:

I will be hitchhiking from Leeds to Morocco this Easter in support of Link Community Development. While traveling, I will also be knitting preemie sets to donate to the local hospitals’ maternity wards along the way. You can help by making a pledge per preemie set; that way your donations will support two very worthy causes.

The Charities

Link Community Development (http://www.lcd.org.uk)

Link Community Development (LCD) funds education in Africa. The organization provides money for supplies, teacher training and HIV/AIDS education. They also help parents and community members to get involved in running the schools, and form partnerships between African and United Kingdom schools to encourage broader horizons for all students and teachers.

Premature babies

The UK has the highest rate of premature births in Europe. A premature birth occurs when the mother goes into labour earlier than the 37 - 42 weeks that are considered a full term. The baby is born with a very low birth weight (between 2.5 and 5 lbs) and not enough body fat to retain a high enough body temperature to survive. Preemie sets – which include a hat, jumper, and booties that the baby wears in the incubator – help the infant retain vital warmth and can increase its chances of survival.

How can you help?

You can help by making pledges per preemie set I knit. A suggested minimum pledge of 50p will be multiplied by the number of preemie sets I complete in the course of my two week travels. The more pledges I get, the more preemie sets I will try to complete so that both charities get the most funding possible! Make pledges by emailing me directly with you name, address (with postal code) and the pledge amount to <email address will be here> You can make direct donations to LCD on my donations website: http://www.justgiving.com/all_thumbs. (Please note: donations given in this way will only support LCD and will not be included in the preemie pledge drive. However, don’t let this stop you from making donations this way – LCD is a wonderful cause!)

Where do your pledges go?

100% of the money donated will go to Link Community Development. The money is used to build/maintain schools, train teachers, buy school supplies and even support the needs of the community, for instance, by digging wells. Here’s an example breakdown of how the money is spent:

 £10

= 1 school desk

 £20

= literacy training for 2 teachers

£50

= HIV/AIDS training for 5 teachers

£100

= fundraising training for 10 community members

£300

= 1 school development grant

Thank you for taking an interest in my fundraiser. I hope you will give generously to help these two extremely worthy causes. The total number of completed preemie sets (this number will be multiplied by the amount you pledge) will be announced in mid April at the end of my hitchhike.
